Piñones

Piñones is a pueblo east of San Juan on the coast. It is home to the best street food and people watching around...

On our trips to Piñones we've enjoyed:

The Food
At Titi's and Lucy's roadside food stands we tried fried delights including Bacalaitos (fried cod fritters/pancakes), Alcapurrias (fried plantains stuffed with meat or fish) and Empanadillas (fried turnovers filled with all sorts of good things) The women insisted that we sit down and enjoy the food with beer. No complaints there.

The People Watching
Fresh coconut water with straws.
Seeing card tables set up in low mangrove trees.
Adults and children swimming in the reef protected beaches (called baby pools)
A boardwalk overlooking 7 miles of ocean beach

It's just fantastic.

Lechon in Guavate

Evan has a long-standing history with pork products. He researched the Lechoneras (pig roasting restaurants) of Guavate and we took a winding journey into the Carite Forest to taste some of the famous flavors:

His and Hers (plantains, habichuelas and rice for the lady, and some roasted pork for the gentleman)

First Week

We made it through our first week in PR and celebrated at the beach. (Thankfully, we had our water+electricity back by that point.) Bliss.

First Anniversary, First Hurricane

Our first weekend in Puerto Rico marked our first anniversary. To celebrate, we waited out Hurricane Irene in our new apartment with a stock of water, candles and wine. We toasted to the wonderful year following our wedding celebration in Marine-on-St.Croix while the wind howled and shook the window panes. Evan kept his cool, but I was pretty scared between the hours of 1 and 3 am.

The morning after, tops of palms, broken walls and bus shelters covered the walkways. Lines at the local liquor stores were out the door. People here know how to get through a crisis :)

Llegamos!

It's been three years since we left our home in D.C. There was a brief, brilliant time in the foothills of California with friends and discussions and creative juices flowing. We had summers to remember in Minnesota. And after all of that we are here -- in the Caribbean --armed with sunscreen, Spanish dictionaries (for me, anyway) and mantras of patience.

It is truly a wonderful time. With grad schools and opposite coast jobs/schedules behind us, we finally just get to LIVE here. And take in the adventures as they come.

We look forward to visitors (so please come!)

Here we'll share stories and pictures from our days in Puerto Rico, hopping from shady spot to shady spot as best that we can.
